Teen Drinking, Wed., Feb. 15, 7:30pm, Wootton Auditorium

Have you wondered if the teen and adolescent drinking situation is a problem in the Wootton Cluster? Did you know kids in middle school have been provided with alcohol at parties? Do you wonder if the parents are home, or even paying attention, when your teens go over to a friend's house on a Saturday night? Or are you a parent who figures they're going to drink anyway; you may as well let them and take away the car keys? Please join us when Assistant Montgomery County State's Attorney Steve Chaiken talks to us about teen drinking.

Parents and students are welcome.

MCCPTA Operating Budget Forum, Wednesday, February 15, 7:30pm
Richard Montgomery HS Auditorium, 250 Richard Montgomery Dr.

Please mark your calendar and plan to attend the MCCPTA Operating Budget Forum. This forum will be attended by Members of the Montgomery County Council and the Board of Education, as well as by MCPS officials. There will be opening remarks by the Council and Board of Education Presidents, followed by YOUR questions from the audience. After $400 million plus in budget cuts over recent years, and in the face of continued increases in enrollment, poverty and ESOL needs, there are very important issues at stake for our schools. The Governor's proposal to shift a portion of the teacher pension funding obligation from the state to the counties, and the efforts to close loopholes in the Maintenance of Effort Law and obtain a waiver for the $26 million penalty facing our schools will be front and center during this budget cycle. We hope you will join us for this very important evening and that, together, we will continue to advocate to support funding for the MCCPTA Operating Budget Priorities.

Helping Hands Holiday Projects
(posted 11/16/07-1/15/08)

As we look ahead to the holiday season, the Helping Hands student committee brainstormed several ways to help the greater community.

Toy Drive

Now through December 12th, the students will be collecting new children's toys for those less fortunate in our local community.

Soldier Support Project

The students would also like to support the soldiers in Iraq and have come up with some very creative ways to do so.
  1. They have created a large banner that says, "You are in our thoughts." It will be hung in the Cafeteria so that all students can sign it. The banner will be mailed to the soldiers in Iraq in time for the holidays.
  2. Gently used Beanie Babies will be collected for soldiers to carry in their backpacks and give to children on the streets of Iraq. This goodwill effort can assist the troops in showing the Iraqis that the soldiers are there to help. The Beanie Baby collection will run through mid January. Read more about sending donations to soldiers.
All donations can be placed in a large drop box marked "Helping Hands" in the Robert Frost Middle School front entryway.

Between now and November 14, 2007

The first Robert Frost Middle School Helping Hands Project of 2007-2008 is underway! 25 enthusiastic students met last week to plan Helping Hands community service projects for the year. Project #1 is collecting gently used winter coats, hats, and scarves (children and adult sizes) for the Stepping Stones Shelter. Between now and November 14, 2007, as you go through your closets to figure out what fits you and your children for the upcoming season, think of donating to those in need. A large drop box marked "Helping Hands" is in the front entryway into Robert Frost Middle School. Please join our efforts and stay tuned for the November/ December project update!
